Amazon is making a second attempt at the smartphone market with a device internally called 'Transformer,' according to a Reuters report. The project, developed by Amazon's Devices and Services unit, would center its user experience on the company's Alexa+ AI assistant and shopping integration. While specifics on cost, OS, and launch timeline are unknown, the report suggests the phone could feature a generative AI interface designed to reduce reliance on traditional app stores. This move comes over a decade after the high-profile failure of the Fire Phone, which was hampered by a limited app ecosystem and gimmicky features.

Industry analysts are deeply skeptical of Amazon's ability to compete in a market dominated by Apple and Samsung, where even established players like Google struggle. Francisco Jeronimo of IDC notes that current economic pressures, including memory costs and supply chain issues, make hardware competition nearly impossible. The potential differentiator is software: if 'Transformer' acts as a dedicated, always-on companion device for Alexa+, it could explore new AI agent capabilities.
