Meta's New AI Lets You Build Video Games on Your Phone

Meta announced two new tools that let you build video games just by describing them in plain English. Horizon Create is a phone app; Horizon Studio is a browser app with finer controls. Type an idea, and you get a finished game — 2D or 3D, with levels, difficulty that adjusts to the player, artwork, and multiplayer. Both are in early access with a waitlist, so you can't use them today, but the door is opening.

The clever part isn't the game-making — it's where the games end up. Meta says your game can be recommended and played directly inside Facebook and Instagram. Someone scrolling past a clip of your game can tap it and be in a multiplayer match within seconds, with no app to download. For most people, that's the real story: your game reaches billions of people who never signed up for anything.

There's a catch. Horizon, Meta's gaming platform, has struggled for years — it had roughly 300,000 monthly users back in 2022, while Roblox has 123 million people playing daily. Roblox is also rolling out AI game creation in its own app. And honestly, games churned out by a prompt often feel generic next to ones a person spent months building. Meta says it will push games that are "engaging, stable, culturally relevant, and keep players coming back," which suggests a lot of AI-made games will quietly sink.

Still, the barrier to making a game just fell from months of learning software to typing a sentence. Expect game clips to start appearing in your feeds, mixed in with the ads and reels. If you've ever had a game idea and no idea how to build it, this is aimed squarely at you.
