Google announced a new feature that lets its AI assistant, Gemini, make phone calls to businesses on your behalf. Instead of dialing yourself, you tell Gemini what you need — book a table, check if a store has something in stock, push back a dentist appointment — and it handles the whole call. That includes the parts everyone hates: punching through automated menus and sitting on hold. The appeal here isn't futuristic glamour — it's raw time and annoyance saved. The average person spends hours each year stuck on hold or repeating the same request to a receptionist. Google says you don't even need to place the call first; you just tell Gemini to call, and it does.

The catch is that this is very much a test. Right now, it's only for people who pay for Gemini, own a Pixel 11, have joined Google's phone beta program, and live in the US. So most of us can't use it yet. There's also an honesty question: businesses may not realize they're talking to a robot, and companies like Meta are reportedly experimenting with similar features that might secretly use humans behind the scenes.

Still, this points clearly at where phones are heading. Voice calls — the last chore that software couldn't automate — are becoming just another thing you delegate. If it works, the days of hold music might genuinely be numbered. That's a small but real quality-of-life upgrade, and it's arriving faster than most people expected.
