Anthropic's Physical Intelligence rumor highlights AI race for robotics

A weekend rumor that Anthropic is acquiring robotics startup Physical Intelligence set AI Twitter ablaze, even after Physical Intelligence CEO Karol Hausman denied it via a Slack message with an 'Office' gif. The rumor wasn't entirely unfounded: The Information reported that Anthropic and Physical Intelligence actually held acquisition talks this spring. Physical Intelligence is no small player — co-founded by rising Silicon Valley star Lachy Groom, it has raised over $1 billion (with a rumored $11 billion valuation), and its π0.5 model is among the most widely used robot brains in research. The episode highlights a deeper industry trend: physical-world understanding may be necessary for superintelligent AI, and both Anthropic and OpenAI are racing to acquire the talent and technology to get there.

OpenAI, which has made 17 acquisitions since 2023, is itself an investor in Physical Intelligence — creating a potential conflict if a sale to Anthropic is in play. Anthropic, which has made four acquisitions this year and confidentially filed for an IPO in June, lacks a hardware robotics lab but has published research like Project Fetch, where Claude helped non-experts program a robot dog. Buying Physical Intelligence would let Anthropic skip years of building robotics expertise. However, OpenAI's stake may come with protective provisions like right of first refusal.
