A 20-year-old man was arrested early Friday morning for an attack on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's residence in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. According to the San Francisco Police Department, the suspect threw a Molotov cocktail at the home around 4:12 a.m., igniting a fire on an exterior gate before fleeing on foot. No injuries were reported. The individual then proceeded to OpenAI's headquarters on 3rd Street, where he allegedly threatened to burn down the building. Police recognized him from the earlier incident and took him into custody at approximately 5:07 a.m. OpenAI confirmed the attacks and expressed appreciation for the SFPD's rapid response.

A new Gallup poll released Thursday shows a significant decline in optimism, particularly among young people aged 14-29, with only 18% now feeling hopeful about AI—down from 27% last year. Thirty-one percent of respondents in that age group reported feeling "angry" about the technology. This attack also follows heightened scrutiny of Altman personally, after a recent critical profile in The New Yorker detailed allegations of dishonesty, which led to his brief ousting from OpenAI in 2023 before he was reinstated.
