OpenAI Spends $300M to Make Phone Cameras Smarter

OpenAI has bought a company called Glass Imaging for more than $300 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. Glass Imaging is a small California startup founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop — two engineers who used to work at Apple, where they led the team behind Portrait Mode, the feature that blurs the background behind your subject. That team raised about $30 million before the deal, so OpenAI paid roughly ten times that to bring them in-house.

What makes Glass Imaging different is when the AI does its work. Most phone cameras take a photo and then software cleans it up afterward. Glass Imaging instead uses AI to learn how each specific camera on each specific phone model sees the world, so the picture comes out better from the instant you press the shutter. The problem they solve is simple: phone cameras are tiny, and tiny lenses can't capture as much light or detail as big ones. Their AI tries to close that gap.

So why does this matter to you? Because OpenAI is clearly moving beyond software. The company is rumored to be building its own devices — phones, earbuds, and AI companion gadgets — and last year it spent $6.5 billion buying a hardware startup from former Apple designer Jony Ive. Buying a camera company is a strong signal that whatever OpenAI ships next will have a camera, and it will likely use AI to make your photos look better than what today's phones can manage.

The catch: this is still just a report, OpenAI hasn't confirmed anything, and no product exists yet. Big acquisitions often take years to show up in something you can actually buy. But if it works, the everyday impact could be real — sharper vacation photos, better pictures in low light, and possibly a new kind of AI device that changes what you expect from the phone in your pocket.
