Nvidia's warm-water cooling cuts data center water use, ignores energy's water cost
Nvidia claims to solve data center water use—but only for 1/3 of the problem.
Nvidia announced a warm-water cooling system that the company claims can eliminate "pretty much all water usage" inside data centers. The system circulates coolant in a closed loop at 45–55°C, using passive radiators cooled by outside air instead of evaporative chillers. According to Nvidia's chief sustainability officer, this solves the water consumption challenge for data centers. The technology is indeed innovative—no new water is consumed on-site after the initial fill, and it can also reduce fan and chiller energy use.
However, Nvidia's definition of water use is limited to within the data center walls. Outside those walls, the vast majority of water consumption happens during electricity generation (fossil fuel plants use 1.17–2.2 L/kWh) and chip manufacturing. The International Energy Agency projects that fossil fuels will supply over 40% of new data center energy through 2030. Hydropower also carries significant evaporation losses (6.8 L/kWh). Nvidia's solution addresses only about 25–33% of total water consumption. Without shifting toward renewables (0.01 L/kWh for wind, 0.03 L/kWh for solar), the broader water footprint of AI data centers continues to grow.
