Zuckerberg predicts billions will have personal AI agents in 5 years

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's founder and CEO, told investors on the Q4 earnings call that he believes billions of people will have personal AI agents within five years. These agents would work around the clock to understand users' goals and assist with finances, health, relationships, and household management. He emphasized that WhatsApp and Meta's messaging surfaces will become central as users interact with multiple agents. Meta is not alone—Google is overhauling Search with custom agents, and Anthropic's Claude Code has seen skyrocketing subscriptions.

However, Meta faces significant financial headwinds. The company's Reality Labs division—responsible for AR/VR—lost $4.6 billion this quarter, bringing total losses to $88 billion since 2021. Free cash flow plunged 91% year-over-year to $784 million, driven by heavy AI infrastructure investments. Meta recently partnered with BlackRock to build a $14 billion data center in Texas. Despite these costs, Zuckerberg believes selling intelligence will yield higher margins than selling compute alone. Meta's business agents already have 1 million adopters, but achieving consumer adoption at 'billions' scale remains a steep challenge.
