Jack Dorsey's Buzz challenges Slack with native AI agents and open-source code

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block, announced Buzz on Tuesday — a new group chat platform designed for workplaces where humans and AI agents collaborate side-by-side. Built by Block (the company behind Square, Cash App, Afterpay, and Tidal), Buzz is positioned as a direct competitor to Slack and GitHub. According to Dorsey, Buzz is "model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source." The platform merges messaging, native AI agents, and GitHub project management into a single workspace. Since it’s open source, developers can fork the code and build custom features for their team’s specific workflows. Buzz is currently in its early stages and available as a free desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with the source code uploaded to GitHub.

Dorsey isn’t the only entrepreneur pursuing AI-native alternatives to Slack. Paradigm partner Georgios Konstantopoulos recently unveiled Centaur, an open-source "virtual employee" that runs inside Slack or via an API, aiming to boost team productivity with AI agents. For startups that haven't already committed to Slack, Buzz and its competitors offer a fresh approach to integrating AI agents into everyday work. However, Buzz itself acknowledges it's early days, so enterprises may want to wait before migrating their entire team. The move signals a growing trend toward decentralized, open-source collaboration tools designed for the age of AI agents.
