Google’s Nano Banana 2 brings advanced AI image tools to free users

Google has significantly democratized access to advanced AI image generation by making its Nano Banana 2 model (internally called Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) available to all free Gemini users. This move effectively brings capabilities that were previously gated behind Google's AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscriptions—such as generating images with real-time web knowledge and legible text—to a much wider audience. The update is rolling out across the Gemini app, AI Mode in Google Search, Google Lens, and the company's AI video tool, Flow, marking a strategic shift to compete more aggressively in the consumer AI space by removing a key paywall.
The technical upgrades in Nano Banana 2 are substantial, offering users more creative control and higher fidelity outputs. The model can now maintain consistency for up to five characters and 14 objects within a single image workflow, provides 'full control' over aspect ratios, and supports resolutions from 512px up to 4K. Google DeepMind states the model utilizes real-time information and its knowledge base to create more relevant infographics and render specific subjects more accurately. While AI Pro and Ultra subscribers retain access to the older Nano Banana Pro for specialized tasks, the new model becomes the default across all generation modes, making high-speed, intelligent visual creation faster and more accessible.
