Malachyte raises $10M to reinvent e-commerce with Spotify's AI

Malachyte, a startup founded by three ex-Spotify engineers who built the streaming giant’s behavioral intelligence infrastructure, has raised $10 million in seed funding to bring its AI-driven personalization technology to e-commerce. Led by CEO Sidd Motwani, the team developed Vector AI—a system that predicts user intent and next actions rather than relying solely on historical behavior. Vector AI powers 90% of Spotify’s recommendations for its 800 million users. Now, Malachyte is adapting this technology for online retail with its "two-headed Vector AI," which dynamically adjusts shopper experiences in real-time without requiring account creation or past purchase history.

The platform uses real-time signals like clicks, searches, and scrolls to infer intent—for example, a user searching for "heavy-duty boot" and clicking steel-toed boots will see work pants and gloves prioritized on the page. Malachyte’s technology has been tested with over 20 enterprise customers since 2024 and is now generally available for Shopify merchants and larger retailers via API. Motwani emphasizes the underutilization of contextual signals, noting that a user’s behavior at 11 p.m. differs from mid-morning. The funding round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with participation from Harpoon Ventures.
