Apple offers free cloud API for Foundation Models to indies under 2M downloads

During its WWDC keynote, Apple revealed that developers with fewer than 2 million first-time App Store downloads can access its Foundation Models running in Private Cloud Compute without paying cloud API fees. The move is designed to help smaller developers experiment with AI without worrying about infrastructure costs, echoing Apple's Small Business Program that reduces commission rates for indie devs. The Foundation Models framework will also expand this year to include image input and support for server models, allowing developers to integrate with their preferred cloud model provider for more complex tasks. Uber recently revealed it exhausted its 2026 AI budget in just four months, highlighting the need for fiscal responsibility. By waiving fees for small developers, Apple not only attracts indie talent but also differentiates its private cloud infrastructure as a privacy-first, budget-friendly option in an increasingly expensive AI landscape.
