Anthropic has rolled out a significant update to Claude's voice mode, giving users the flexibility to choose between Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku models instead of being limited to the faster but less capable Haiku. The voice mode now defaults to the model you last used in text chat, selecting its fastest version. This upgrade enables longer, more complex conversations, allowing users to get feedback on their communication style, rehearse client pitches, or brainstorm product-market research.
A standout feature is Claude's ability to tap into external apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva, and Notion. Users can ask Claude to update a meeting slot, draft an email, or create a document in Notion—a capability that OpenAI's voice mode currently lacks. The update also brings multilingual support (10 languages) to voice mode, though users must manually specify the language. Available in beta to all users, free users are restricted to the Haiku model with only one connected app. Anthropic hasn't disclosed the underlying voice stack, so users may not see improvements in interruption handling like OpenAI's recent release.
