Anthropic's Dario Amodei runs trillion-dollar firm with one direct report

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei disclosed in a Bloomberg interview that he has just one direct report: his chief of staff. Everyone else on the executive team reports to his sister, co-founder and President Daniela Amodei, who handles day-to-day operations. 'It's incredibly freeing,' Amodei told Emily Chang, explaining that the arrangement allows him to focus entirely on strategy, culture, research direction, and writing sweeping essays on the future of civilization. This structure is highly unusual for a CEO of a company valued at roughly $1 trillion, just over five years after founding.

For context, OpenAI's Sam Altman reportedly has around half a dozen direct reports, which is far more standard. Nvidia's Jensen Huang, another extreme outlier at the opposite end, has many dozens of direct reports. The Amodei model frees the CEO from the consuming demands of people management, enabling him to concentrate on high-level vision and technical direction. Daniela Amodei's role as president effectively makes her the operational head, while Dario serves as the strategic and intellectual leader. This division of labor could become a case study in how fast-growing AI companies can structure leadership to maximize both execution and innovation.
