Anthropic becomes first AI startup to join $1.8B Frontier carbon removal coalition

Anthropic has become the first pure AI startup to join Frontier, the carbon removal collective founded by Stripe, Google, and Shopify. The company contributed to a new $915 million tranche, nearly doubling Frontier's total pledges to $1.8 billion. Frontier has already contracted about $700 million across more than 50 projects to remove 1.8 million tons of carbon dioxide. The collective vets carbon removal companies and signs contracts for those it believes can deliver at scale. Anthropic's membership comes at a time when AI companies have been on an energy buying spree, often reliant on polluting power. Previously, Anthropic had no climate-related deals and had not produced a sustainability report, advocating an "all of the above" energy approach. This move may signal a shift in corporate attitudes, as the AI industry faces growing scrutiny over its environmental impact.

Frontier also announced a strategic shift: it will fund fewer projects but focus on those with the best chance of removing one gigaton (1 billion metric tons) of CO2 or more annually. New contracts will run 8 to 10 years, and carbon removal companies must demonstrate a path to government subsidy or support. This mirrors a similar pivot by Microsoft, the largest buyer of carbon removal credits. While the UN's IPCC says carbon removal technology is necessary for net-zero emissions, the burden is expected to eventually fall on governments. Frontier's new approach aims to accelerate maturity in the carbon removal market, ensuring long-term viability rather than perpetually underwriting the industry.
