Anthropic's Claude deal gives California government 50% discount on AI tools

Governor Gavin Newsom and Anthropic have finalized a partnership that grants California government agencies discounted access to Claude, Anthropic's AI chatbot, at roughly half the standard enterprise price. Under the agreement, all state agencies and local governments will not only receive reduced-cost access but also dedicated training and support from Anthropic. The Governor's office stated Claude will assist employees in drafting documents and analyzing information, emphasizing that AI should augment human workers, not replace them. This initiative follows Newsom's March executive order accelerating AI adoption for government efficiency while maintaining safety standards.

The California deal stands in stark contrast to Anthropic's contentious relationship with the federal government. Earlier this year, Anthropic and the U.S. Department of Defense clashed over a contract when Anthropic refused to allow its technology to be used for surveillance or autonomous weapons without human oversight. The Pentagon subsequently signed with OpenAI and even designated Anthropic a "supply-chain risk," blocking the company from working with other defense contractors. However, California CIO Chris Given noted that this designation "just didn't come up" during negotiations, highlighting the state's willingness to partner with Anthropic despite federal friction.
