Amazon's New AI Wearables Want to Replace Your Apps
Forget apps—your devices might soon know what you need before you do.
Amazon is placing a big bet on a future where you don't need to open apps to get things done. At TechCrunch Disrupt, Panos Panay, Amazon's devices chief, said we're heading toward 'ambient devices'—gadgets that quietly work in the background using sensors and AI to figure out what you need, instead of you having to tell them. He believes this will let you stay more present and spend more time with people, not your phone.
The company just launched new Bee devices: a band you can wear on your wrist or as a pendant, and a credit-card-sized gadget that sticks to your phone. These passively record audio and take notes, finding to-dos, reminders, and insights. To address privacy, Bee devices don't store raw audio—they process it in real time and delete it. Transcripts are encrypted with keys only you control, so even Amazon can't access them unless you share.
Panay, who spent 19 years at Microsoft before joining Amazon, thinks the next generation won't ask for apps but will expect devices to understand their needs. He doesn't think one device will replace another; instead, an intelligence layer will connect everything. The smartphone will still matter, but new sensors will bring AI into the world around you.
This shift could mean less time fiddling with apps and more time living. But it also raises questions: Will people trust always-listening devices? And can Amazon keep its privacy promises? The success of ambient computing may depend on getting that balance right.
- Amazon's new Bee wearables record and transcribe your day, then delete the audio to protect privacy.

- The devices aim to save you time by automatically capturing reminders and to-dos.
Why It Matters
These AI wearables could save you time by handling tasks automatically, but they also raise privacy concerns about always-listening devices.
