Spotify adds 'AI Persona' labels to fight AI slop
Spotify will label AI-generated artist profiles and block their music from recommendations starting next month.
Spotify is rolling out 'AI Persona' badges to label AI-generated artist profiles, starting with a manual review of profiles meeting audience thresholds. The labels will appear across the platform—artist banners, About sections, search results, and track rows—but AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default. Users must explicitly follow an AI Persona for its music to surface in personalized recommendations, addressing concerns about 'AI slop' (low-quality AI-generated content) degrading user experience.
The move aligns with Spotify’s broader AI policies, which already ban unauthorized AI voice clones and deepfakes. AI Personas are judged based on profile identity, not music creation methods (which will still be tracked via features like AI Credits). Starting August 2026, artists can self-disclose AI Personas, while labels will roll out in September. This follows Spotify’s recent licensing deals with UMG and Merlin to allow fan-made AI remixes and covers, creating a clear distinction between AI Personas and AI-generated content like remixes.
