Nvidia-Backed British AI Data Center Firm Raises $3.4 Billion Before IPO
Nvidia just bet $1 billion that the AI building boom keeps going.
A British company called Nscale said Friday it has raised $3.36 billion — one of the biggest funding rounds of the year — just weeks before it sells shares to the public for the first time. The money comes as a "convertible note," which is basically a loan that turns into company shares once Nscale lists on the New York Stock Exchange later this year. Hedge fund Third Point led the round. About $2.36 billion is available right away, and chip giant Nvidia is adding $1 billion in mid-November.
Nscale isn't a household name, but it builds the physical plumbing behind AI. It calls itself a "neocloud" — a cloud service designed specifically for AI rather than general websites and apps. The company was spun out of an Australian crypto-mining business just two years ago, yet its IPO paperwork lists more than $103 billion in signed contracts. It's building huge data center campuses, including in Norway and West Virginia.
So why should you care? Every AI chatbot, image generator, and coding assistant you use actually lives in a warehouse full of chips that consume enormous amounts of electricity and water. Funding rounds like this one decide how much of that machinery gets built — which affects how fast AI becomes, how cheap the tools get, and how much strain they put on local power grids. Nscale's expected $35 billion valuation shows investors still believe demand is nowhere near its ceiling.
The catch: this is an enormous bet. Nscale is borrowing billions before it has even gone public, and if the AI boom cools, those half-built campuses become very expensive empty buildings. Nvidia's $1 billion also means your AI chip supplier is now an investor in the companies buying its chips — a cozy arrangement worth watching. And someone ultimately pays for all that electricity, often local ratepayers.
- Nscale, a British builder of AI data centers, raised $3.36 billion in the form of a loan that becomes shares when it goes public later this year.
- Nvidia is putting $1 billion of its own money in, on top of the $103 billion in contracts Nscale says it has already signed.
- More AI data centers can mean faster, cheaper AI for you — but also higher electricity demand in the towns that host them.
Why It Matters
More AI data centers could mean cheaper, faster AI tools for you — and bigger power bills nearby.
