Alibaba's New Free AI, Qwen 4, Takes Aim at ChatGPT

Alibaba, China's biggest cloud company, used its annual Apsara Conference to announce Qwen 4 — the newest version of its family of AI models. "Models" is the tech word for the underlying brain that powers a chatbot. Qwen is Alibaba's answer to ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, and it is widely used both in China and by developers around the world.

Why should you care about a model announcement you'll never download yourself? Because Qwen's big selling point has always been that it is free and open. In plain terms: Alibaba typically lets anyone copy the AI and run it on their own computers, at no charge, rather than keeping it behind a paywall. That has made it a favourite of small startups and hobbyists who can't afford monthly AI bills. If Qwen 4 is stronger than before, expect cheaper AI features inside apps you already use — writing helpers, photo editors, translation, customer service bots — because companies building those tools get a capable brain for next to nothing.

It also matters for competition. Right now, most people's AI experience runs through a handful of American companies. A serious free alternative from China puts pressure on everyone to improve and lower prices. Some governments and companies also like the idea of running AI on their own machines, so sensitive data never leaves the building — open models make that possible.

One honest catch: the announcement image did not include the details that actually matter, like how large the model is, how well it performs, or when you can get it. "Announced" is not the same as "available." Treat this as a date on the calendar, not a product you can use today.
