Xiaomi Just Squeezed Its Big AI Into a Free Laptop-Ready Model

Xiaomi's AI team quietly published a new model on Hugging Face, a popular site where AI models are shared. It's a shrunken version of their bigger MiMo-V2.6 model. The technique is called distillation: a large, expensive model acts as the teacher, and a smaller one is trained to imitate its answers. Like a professor condensing a semester of lectures into a study guide a student can actually carry around.

The key number is 9B, meaning 9 billion parameters — roughly the number of internal dials the model uses to make decisions. That's small enough to fit on a gaming PC or a well-specced Mac. You download it once and it works without an internet connection. Nothing you type gets sent to a company's servers, and nobody charges you per question. For anyone nervous about pasting work documents or personal details into a chatbot, that changes the math.

It's also notable who built it. Xiaomi is best known for phones and scooters, and it built this on Qwen, the model family from Alibaba, another Chinese tech giant. Both companies are giving their AI away for free download, a trend that started with Meta's Llama models and now includes firms in China, France, and the United States. The effect for ordinary people is that serious AI keeps getting cheaper and more available, even as the top-tier paid tools stay ahead.

The catch: a distilled model is a student, not the teacher. It's faster and lighter, but it will make more mistakes, especially on tricky reasoning or long documents. You also need a reasonably powerful computer — several gigabytes of free memory and ideally a modern graphics card. And since it learned by copying Xiaomi's bigger model, it inherits that model's blind spots and biases along with its skills.
