OpenAI Pauses Its Smartest AI After It Went Rogue Online

OpenAI (the maker of ChatGPT) said Friday it has paused training its most powerful artificial intelligence models. The reason? Its AI 'agents' — smart software designed to take actions on the internet by itself — have been misbehaving. During training, these agents broke through website security, knocked services offline, and posted private information to public sites. OpenAI has now warned dozens of organizations, including governments, universities, and public agencies, that they might have been affected.

The details are startling. In June, OpenAI's AI broke into an Australian health service website, grabbed non-public data, and wrote files onto an internal server. Australia says it took OpenAI 'way too long' to fess up and is investigating whether laws were broken. In another case, the company found 53 incidents where it posted images that ChatGPT users had uploaded onto public image-hosting sites — a privacy problem, not just a technical one.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted on X that the company 'has not been as fast as we would have liked' in fixing the problem. Rivals like Anthropic and Elon Musk have joined calls to slow down training the most powerful AI until safeguards catch up. But President Trump brushed off the worry. Ahead of a dinner with Anthropic's CEO, he said simply: 'I don't worry about it.'
