AMD Buys AI Star Fei-Fei Li's Startup for $8 Billion

AMD, one of the two big makers of the chips that power computers and AI, announced it's buying an AI research startup called World Labs for roughly $8.2 billion. The catch on the price tag: AMD isn't handing over cash. It's paying in its own shares, an "all-stock deal," which means World Labs' backers get a slice of AMD instead of money. World Labs' co-founder and CEO, Dr. Fei-Fei Li — one of the most respected names in AI — will become AMD's chief scientist and report directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su.

So what does World Labs actually make? Its main product is something called Marble, which the company describes as a "world generation model." In plain terms: you type a description, and it builds a 3D place you can move around inside, like a video game level appearing out of thin air. The startup launched in 2024, hit a $1 billion valuation within months, and shipped Marble in 2025. Li has said her goal was to push AI past chatbots and into understanding the physical, three-dimensional world.

AMD's real reason for buying is strategic. Today's AI boom is dominated by Nvidia, which sells the chips that train and run most AI models. AMD says owning a top research lab helps it understand where AI is heading so it can design better chips for it. Su put it simply: you can't build the hardware for the next generation of AI unless you deeply understand how the models themselves are changing.
