OpenAI's ChatGPT Work automates enterprise workflows with GPT-5.6

OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Work, a new enterprise offering that leverages GPT-5.6 to automate workplace tasks across multiple applications and files. The tool uses a plugin architecture to integrate with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email systems, calendars, CRM platforms, and project trackers. Once connected, ChatGPT Work gathers context from apps and workflows to autonomously create finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites. It can refine drafts in the background while users work on other tasks. Scheduled Tasks enable the AI to continue working when users are offline, taking new messages and turning them into updated deliverables that are circulated among team members. The offering is available immediately on Pro, Enterprise, and Edu plans, with Plus and Business plans gaining access in the coming days; the desktop app includes the feature even on the free plan.

This launch intensifies the agentic AI race among major players. Anthropic previously released Claude Cowork with plugins for legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis, triggering a selloff in software and professional services stocks. Microsoft followed with Copilot Cowork to expand its own agentic offering. OpenAI's ChatGPT Work builds on earlier agentic tools like Operator and deep research, which were consolidated into ChatGPT Agent for individuals and Workspace Agents for enterprises. The new tool positions OpenAI to capture a larger share of enterprise automation, though it faces stiff competition from Anthropic and Microsoft as all three vie for dominance in AI-powered workplace productivity.
