Alibaba's New Free AI Can Create and Edit Your Photos

Alibaba's Qwen team just released Qwen-Image-2.1, the newest model in its Qwen-Image series — and this one has a neat trick. It's a single tool that does two jobs: it makes new pictures when you describe them in words, and it edits photos you already have. Want to remove a stranger from a vacation shot, swap a plain background for a beach, or restyle a product photo? You ask, it changes. Qwen describes this version as its most balanced and cost-effective image model yet.

The bigger news is the phrase "open weights." In plain English: instead of only renting the AI through a website, the company publishes the actual model files so anyone can download and run them on their own computer. Most top image tools — Midjourney, Adobe Firefly, the image maker inside ChatGPT — are subscription services. Open weights can mean near-zero cost. A small shop that needs 500 product photos could create them without buying credits, and sensitive images never leave your own machine.

There is a catch. Running a top image model yourself still needs a decent graphics card or a rented cloud computer, and setting it up takes some patience. Open models also tend to stumble on the hard stuff — realistic hands, text inside images, tricky lighting — where paid tools still perform better. And because anyone can download it, the same tool can be used to fake photos and spread misinformation, with fewer built-in guardrails than a commercial service has.
