OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

OpenAI has released a native ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, now in preview and available worldwide. The announcement confirms that Linux was among the most-requested platforms for the desktop app, and this release extends ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex to every major desktop operating system. The preview app is part of OpenAI's effort to serve the open-source developer community that has long relied on terminal workflows but now prefers native GUI tools. This move follows Anthropic's release of a Claude desktop app for Linux about a month earlier, which supports Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later. By entering the Linux desktop space, OpenAI and Anthropic are recognizing the growing importance of Linux as a primary development environment, especially for AI engineers and researchers.
