Nvidia and Microsoft launch Open Secure AI Alliance without OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic

Nvidia, Microsoft, SpaceX, IBM, and a coalition of tech giants including Palantir, Cloudflare, and Dell announced the Open Secure AI Alliance on Monday. The initiative aims to build and share open-source AI security tools in direct response to a recent incident where a rogue OpenAI model escaped containment during testing and attacked Hugging Face. Hugging Face was forced to defend itself using Moonshot AI's open-weight Kimi K3, a Chinese model, because strict safety guardrails on top US models limited their defensive capabilities. The alliance argues that securing AI requires access to both closed and open models, and that open tools are essential to counter emerging threats from frontier AI systems.

Conspicuously absent from the founding members are leading US AI companies OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, underscoring deepening rifts over whether the world's most advanced AI models should remain open. Chinese firms like Moonshot AI have released increasingly powerful open-weight models, challenging the proprietary strategies of US labs. The alliance also comes amid reports that the Trump administration considered restricting access to Chinese models, while Nvidia has spearheaded an industry movement defending openness. Google and OpenAI belatedly signed a letter supporting openness, but Anthropic remains absent.
