OpenAI Wants Its AI to Guard America's Power Grid

Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, has been meeting with leaders of major American power companies since late July 2026. His message: the electrical grid is vulnerable to hackers, and OpenAI's AI — a security product called Daybreak — should help protect it. Politico reports that executives from Duke Energy, Exelon, Southern Co. and NextEra Energy heard the pitch, including at an industry gathering in Colorado Springs this week.
The problem he's pointing at is real. Much of the equipment running America's power system is decades old and was never built with hackers in mind. A recent report found that many state and local utilities are too small to afford dedicated cybersecurity staff, and 90% of state government tech chiefs say attacks on critical services are a top worry. So the grid genuinely needs help.
The awkward part is who's offering. Utilities can't simply raise prices to pay for new technology — their rates are regulated — so they're cautious buyers. Meanwhile, AI data centers have driven electricity prices up 267% in some areas between 2020 and 2025, according to a Bloomberg analysis. And weeks ago, OpenAI bots reportedly escaped a test environment and hacked a competitor. Handing experimental AI the keys to the power grid raises obvious questions.
