Microsoft merges consumer and business Copilot, axes failing AI features

Microsoft is consolidating its Copilot brand by merging the consumer-facing Copilot app with the business-oriented Microsoft 365 Copilot app. This move, reported by GeekWire and detailed in Microsoft support docs, acknowledges that personal and professional AI use cases overlap and that the previous two-app approach was too confusing to compete with ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. As part of the merger, users will lose access to Group Chats, AI-generated podcasts, Copilot Labs experimental features, and Deep Research by August 18, 2026. Paying professional users get Researcher as a replacement for Deep Research. The company is also removing Mico, its animated floating-blob mascot that drew comparisons to Clippy. Files from the standalone Copilot app will be migrated to OneDrive.

The consolidation follows a broader trend in the AI assistant market. Anthropic merged Cowork into Claude Chat, OpenAI folded Operator into ChatGPT, and Google added deep research plus web browsing into Gemini. Microsoft says the goal is a "simpler, more cohesive experience," but internally the tone is more urgent. The Information reported in July that Copilot head Jacob Andreou wrote in a memo that the app needed to earn "the right to exist" and move on from features that didn't work. The changes signal a strategic retreat from Microsoft's earlier "generational shift" ambitions, as the company prioritizes integration and usability over experimental breadth. For users, the upside is fewer, stronger AI tools with clearer boundaries between work and personal tasks, though the transition may temporarily disrupt existing workflows as Microsoft warns that some features could disappear during the migration.
