Meta AI adds calendar briefings and autonomous task handling

Meta is pivoting its AI chatbot from entertainment to productivity, launching an update that turns Meta AI into a more capable assistant. Powered by the newly released Muse Spark 1.1 model, the chatbot can now integrate with your calendar to generate daily briefings, recommend restaurants for events, and even check schedule availability automatically. It also gains the ability to perform in-depth, steerable research — users can adjust the direction of responses mid-stream, similar to ChatGPT. Additionally, Meta AI can now handle recurring tasks like weekly meal plans or product restock alerts without requiring repeated prompts.

This marks a significant shift from Meta’s earlier strategy, as CPO Chris Cox told employees last year that the focus would be on entertainment and social connection rather than productivity. Now Meta says this is its “next step toward personal superintelligence,” directly competing with ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. The update is rolling out today in select markets via the Meta AI app and web, with broader availability on WhatsApp and other platforms in the coming weeks.
