Students who collaborated closely with their mentor and worked in big lab groups were more likely to publish in elite journals while still in training. But after graduation, those same two things were linked to slightly lower chances of publishing at all, and fewer papers when they did. The likely reason: a tight mentor relationship and a crowded lab give you resources and reputation, but they can also leave you dependent on someone else's agenda.

What actually predicted sustained success after training was keeping your network alive and letting your research interests evolve. Maintaining professional relationships showed the strongest and most consistent link to publishing more over the following 6 to 20 years. Staying on the exact same topic helped early on, but became less helpful over longer stretches — consistent with the idea that scientists do better when they broaden their questions rather than repeat a mentor's.

The authors describe this as a "stage-dependent" process: training resources help you enter the elite club, but long-term output depends on how you keep or reshape your intellectual and social ties.
