AI Price Bots Are Quietly Teaming Up to Charge You More
Telling AI 'don't collude' barely works — but adding a rival does.
Companies are increasingly handing pricing decisions to AI — think airlines, ride-hailing apps, hotels and online stores adjusting prices by the minute. Past research showed that when two of these AI programs compete over many rounds, they drift toward charging more, even though nobody programmed them to collude. This new paper repeats that experiment using DeepSeek-V3.1, an open AI model, and sees the same pattern: the exact wording of instructions quietly changes how high prices go.
Why does that matter? Real price-fixing usually requires a secret agreement, which is illegal and hard to hide. Here, no agreement exists. Two AI systems simply learn that holding prices high is profitable as long as the other side does the same. That makes the behavior tough to police under current rules, and it can quietly raise what you pay for everyday things.
The author tested three fixes. First, a warning written into the AI's instructions: prices dropped, but stayed above competitive levels. Second, a regulator that makes the AI expect a financial penalty when it overcharges — this brought prices close to a normal two-company competitive benchmark and erased the gap between prompt styles. Third, an active random entrant, basically a surprise newcomer jumping into the market, which produced the strongest effect and pushed prices below the competitive benchmark.
The takeaway: telling AI to behave is the weakest tool available. Changing the money incentives, or keeping markets open to new competitors, does far more. The honest caveat is that this is a simulation, not a real market, and the results are described as preliminary evidence from a single model. Still, it suggests that how we structure markets — not how nicely we ask — will decide whether AI pricing helps or quietly costs you money.
