IRC urges tech and philanthropists to fund AI for 118 million displaced

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) called on tech leaders and philanthropists at this week's UN AI for Good Global Summit to fund responsible AI solutions for refugees and vulnerable communities. With nearly 118 million people forcibly displaced worldwide — and displacement figures showing only a fragile decline — the IRC argues that AI can bridge critical gaps in humanitarian response. “The true test of the technology revolution is whether it delivers for the most vulnerable,” said CIO Rachael Stewart. The organization is pushing for investment in open, scalable AI systems that can help humanitarian organizations reach more people more effectively, especially in health, education, and crisis preparedness.

Among its flagship initiatives, the IRC’s Signpost platform delivers verified information in over 25 languages across 30 countries, now enhanced with AI to reduce response times and support trauma-informed interactions. The aprendIA tool, an AI teacher assistant on WhatsApp, helps children in conflict zones continue learning. Other projects include AI-assisted mpox diagnosis for frontline health workers, climate forecasting models that pre-position aid before disasters, and virtual assistants that help refugees navigate U.S. resettlement. The IRC also partners with tech firms to deploy AI that identifies human trafficking survivors and connects them to services. All efforts are guided by a rigorous commitment to responsible AI development.
