Intel's €5B Ireland investment boosts AI chip manufacturing

Intel has announced a €5 billion investment to expand its semiconductor manufacturing facility in Co Kildare, Ireland, doubling down on AI and high-performance computing (HPC) chip production. The funds will upgrade and maximize capacity for Intel 3 silicon wafers, which Intel describes as Europe's most advanced semiconductor manufacturing process. The expansion aims to meet the surging global demand for AI accelerators and HPC chips, positioning Intel to compete more aggressively against rivals like TSMC and Samsung.

The investment is part of Intel's broader strategy to strengthen its foundry business and secure supply chains for next-generation AI hardware. The Kildare facility already produces chips for Intel's 3-nanometer-class process node (Intel 3), which is used in AI data center processors and other high-performance applications.
