Opal pivots from webcams to AI audio with OpenAI backing and a measured strategy
Opal Camera, a San Francisco startup known for its premium C1 webcam, is rebranding as Opal Electronics and pivoting to AI-powered consumer hardware. The transition is fueled by a $40 million Series B funding round from OpenAI, which closed in Q1 2025 and values Opal at around $275 million. Other investors include Samsung, Peter Thiel, Alexis Ohanian's Seven Seven Six, and tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD). OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, an early fan of Opal's webcam, visited the team in 2022 to discuss running Whisper transcription locally—and later previewed ChatGPT, which inspired Opal's shift into an AI-focused research lab.
Opal's first AI product is an audio gadget expected to launch in the next three to four months. Currently being tested by Altman, researchers at OpenAI, and executives at xAI, Thinking Machines, and Anthropic, the device is a familiar product category (not a wearable or iPhone competitor) and will ship in partnership with a specific AI lab, though users can switch between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. Opal plans two more products within 12 months and promises to open-source designs after end of life. Unlike the failed Humane Ai Pin and Rabbit R1, Opal is taking a measured approach, promising little and delivering beyond that. OpenAI is the largest shareholder but holds no IP or design rights, allowing Opal to work with any lab.
