NY Governor Hochul uses AI to analyze every state rule in months
AI cut a 5-year manual review down to just a couple months.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul is putting AI to work cutting through bureaucratic red tape. During an interview on Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast, Hochul announced that her team used AI to analyze 'every single rule, regulation, [and] policy' in the state, identifying outdated legislation that could be eliminated. She estimated the manual effort would have taken five years, but with AI, the team finished 'in a couple of months.'
Examples of antiquated laws include a $25 fee required to take a dog hunting and a stipulation that pregnant people need a permit to work after midnight. Hochul's move comes alongside a separate moratorium on new hyperscale AI data centers in the state, aimed at protecting residents from rising utility costs and environmental threats. She emphasized the broader potential: 'I want a government thatβs not on your back but on your side, and using AI has been powerful to do that. I think every level of government should use this.'
- AI reviewed all of New York's rules in a couple of months instead of an estimated five years of manual work.
- Examples of outdated regulations include a $25 fee for hunting with a dog and a permit requirement for pregnant night workers.
- Hochul plans to use AI to remove these antiquated laws and encourages other governments to adopt similar tools.
Why It Matters
AI dramatically accelerates government modernization, cutting years of manual review into months for faster policy cleanup.
