New Research Lets AI Write in Your Voice, Not a Robot's

Right now, if you ask an AI assistant to write an email "as you," it does something fairly crude: it looks back through your chats, jots down a list of preferences like "prefers short sentences" or "likes a friendly tone," and stuffs that list into the prompt. That works okay for one task, but the moment you switch from writing a memo to drafting a birthday message, the assistant has to relearn who you are. The researchers argue this is backwards. Your preferences change with the task; your personality doesn't.

Their fix is something they call the Atomic User Model — think of it as a one-page profile of you that a human could actually read. It has a core identity at the center and four layers around it: your psychology, how you think and what you've experienced, how you behave, and your social style. It also notes where you contradict yourself, because real people do. When you ask the AI for something, it doesn't dump the whole profile in. A small piece of software picks just the few fields relevant to the task at hand — usually about eight of them.

That restraint is where the numbers get interesting. Feeding the AI eight fields took 211 tokens of memory instead of 915 — roughly a quarter of the space — while matching the writing quality of the full profile just as well. On a five-point style-matching scale, it beat the old preference-list approach by 0.24 points. And when simulated users were shown several samples and asked to spot their own voice, they succeeded 42.7% of the time, up from 14.9%. Random guessing would land at 25%, so the old method was actually worse than a coin flip.

The most striking finding: the people who benefited most were the ones the generic AI imitates worst. Personalisation helped least those already well-served by default settings. In other words, if you write in an unusual style, this matters more to you.

The honest catch: this was tested with 16 simulated participants, not real people, across six writing tasks. Nobody has shipped it in a product yet, and the study's own authors flagged that real-world results could differ.
