Wind, solar, and hydrogen already power 60% of China's newest Antarctic base
China's newest Antarctic research station, Qinling Station, is proving that clean energy can survive the world's harshest environment. Opened in 2024 on Inexpressible Island in Terra Nova Bay, the base already meets more than 60% of its energy demand through a hybrid system combining wind turbines, solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells, and energy storage batteries. That's a major shift for a continent where diesel has historically been the only reliable power source, and where inland temperatures can plummet below -80°C (-112°F) with winds exceeding 200km/h for days.
Now China is scaling that ambition. Sun Hongbin, chief scientist of the country's polar clean energy programme, told state-run China Natural Resources News in June that the goal is 100% renewable power across all of China's Antarctic research stations by 2035. That would eliminate nearly all diesel consumption at their bases, cutting logistics costs and carbon emissions in one of the most fragile ecosystems on Earth. Qinling serves as the testbed: if the wind-solar-hydrogen-storage mix can hold up through months of total darkness and extreme cold, the same architecture can be deployed to older stations. The move also positions China as a leader in polar clean energy technology, with potential applications for remote communities and off-grid industrial sites worldwide.
