Anthropic launches rupee pricing for Claude in India, its second-largest market

India now gets localized pricing for Claude Pro at ₹2,000/month, but no UPI support yet.

Deep Dive

Anthropic has begun rolling out Indian rupee pricing for its Claude AI assistant, targeting its largest market outside the United States. India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it the second-biggest country by usage. The new local pricing appears on Claude's website and mobile apps for some users: Claude Pro is ₹2,000 per month (about $21) when billed annually, compared to $17 in the US; Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 (≈$125) monthly versus $100 in the US; and Team plans are ₹2,399 (≈$25) per seat per month versus $20 in the US. These Indian prices include local taxes. Mobile app pricing varies slightly.

Notably, Anthropic has not yet integrated Unified Payments Interface (UPI), India's dominant instant payment network, unlike OpenAI which added UPI support for ChatGPT in August. Users still must pay by credit card or via Apple/Google app store billing. The localization effort aligns with Anthropic's broader India expansion: it opened a Bengaluru office in February, appointed former Microsoft India MD Irina Ghose to lead the business in January, and partnered with IT services giants Infosys and TCS. However, Anthropic faced a setback in June when it restricted access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-US entities, prompting some Indian developers to consider alternatives. The Fable 5 restriction has since been lifted, but Mythos 5 access remains limited. Converting high usage into paid subscriptions in price-sensitive India remains a challenge.

Key Points
  • India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, making it Anthropic's second-largest market after the US.
  • Claude Pro annual is ₹2,000/month ($21) vs US $17; Max at ₹11,999/month ($125) vs US $100.
  • Anthropic hasn't enabled UPI payments yet, unlike OpenAI's ChatGPT which supports UPI since August.

Why It Matters

Localized pricing and UPI support will be crucial for AI companies to convert India's developer base into paid subscribers.
