Anthropic restores Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after export controls lifted

Anthropic announced Tuesday that export controls on its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models have been lifted, with Fable 5 access restored starting July 1. The models were taken offline on June 12 after the Trump administration issued export controls citing reports that Fable 5's safeguards could be easily bypassed. Controls on the more exclusive Mythos 5 were eased on June 26. Fable 5 was intended as a consumer-ready version with toned-down capabilities, but concerns over its safety led to the intervention.

Anthropic has been in negotiations with the Trump administration since the controls were imposed. Over the past week, those talks reportedly improved, culminating in the lifting of controls on Tuesday night. The company expressed gratitude to users for their patience and to those who worked with them during the process. The Mythos model family was initially limited to a select group of partner organizations due to fear among governments and institutions about vulnerability to cyberattacks. With access restored, Fable 5 will now be available to the public again, while Mythos 5 remains restricted to approved partners. The resolution marks a significant step in balancing AI innovation with national security concerns.
