Anthropic builds Theseus data centers to control its AI future
Anthropic takes on hyperscalers with $100B+ data center play and $100B+ AWS deal
Anthropic has launched Theseus Infrastructure, a joint venture with Macquarie Asset Management and GIC (Singapore’s sovereign fund), to build purpose-built US data centers for its AI workloads. Anthropic will serve as the anchor tenant under long-term leases, while Macquarie and GIC own the majority equity and fund the infrastructure. Notably, Anthropic is committing to cover 100% of grid upgrade costs and electricity price increases—a first for a frontier AI lab—which removes a major hurdle in data center siting and community approval processes. This move reduces Anthropic’s dependency on hyperscalers like AWS, where it has already committed over $100 billion for Trainium capacity over a decade. Theseus adds a critical layer of owned physical infrastructure without burdening Anthropic’s balance sheet.
Meanwhile, the European Commission has issued binding orders under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) requiring Google to open Android to rival AI assistants like Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Starting August 2027, EU Android users will be able to set these assistants as defaults with full system-level integration—including voice activation, on-device context, and autonomous app actions—currently reserved for Google’s Gemini. Additionally, Google must share search data with rivals from January 2027 under FRAND pricing. Google may appeal, but the orders remain enforceable, with fines up to 10% of global turnover for non-compliance. These changes apply only to EU/EEA Android users, not global markets.
- Anthropic’s Theseus JV with Macquarie and GIC builds dedicated US data centers to reduce reliance on AWS and hyperscalers
- EU DMA forces Google to open Android to rival AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT by August 2027, including full system integration and search data access
- Anthropic commits to covering 100% of grid upgrade costs and electricity price increases—a first for a frontier AI lab
Why It Matters
AI infrastructure moves from hyperscaler leases to co-owned facilities, while EU regulators break Google’s AI monopoly in Android—reshaping the competitive landscape for AI services.
