Alibaba Qwen App Integrates with China Eastern Airlines for Flight Bookings

Alibaba has taken a significant step in expanding the real-world utility of its AI by striking its first external partnership for its flagship Qwen consumer app with China Eastern Airlines. This integration transforms Qwen from a conversational assistant into an active agent, enabling users to complete the entire flight booking journey—from initial search and ticket purchase to seat selection and check-in—seamlessly within a single chat interface. The app is designed to act proactively, anticipating user needs and suggesting options, moving beyond simple Q&A to executing complex, multi-step tasks.

This deal represents a strategic pivot for Alibaba, pushing its agentic AI capabilities beyond the confines of its own e-commerce and service ecosystem and into broader consumer services. According to Wu Jia, president of the Qwen app, this marks the first time these capabilities are available to external partners. The move is a key part of Alibaba's effort to drive adoption of its full AI stack and validate its massive 380 billion yuan ($55.6 billion) three-year investment pledge in AI and cloud, of which over 120 billion yuan has already been spent. The company plans to expand these integrations into airline loyalty programs and other travel services, signaling a clear roadmap to deepen real-world use cases and strengthen its position in applied, agentic AI.
