Alibaba Cloud doubles modular data centers in 2026 for faster AI builds

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud-computing arm of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, announced plans to more than double its global modular data center capacity in 2026. The move directly responds to escalating demand for AI computing infrastructure, as enterprises and governments race to deploy large-scale machine learning workloads. Alibaba's modular approach—using pre-fabricated, standardized components—allows the company to deploy large AI data centers in roughly 100 days, a significant speed advantage over traditional construction timelines that often stretch beyond a year.

Beyond speed, the standardized design cuts construction costs by more than 10% compared with conventional data center development, according to the company. This cost efficiency is critical as AI infrastructure spend spirals globally. The capacity expansion will focus on boosting the velocity and scale of Alibaba Cloud's AI infrastructure across international markets, enabling faster rollout of services like its Qwen foundation models and cloud-based AI solutions. With hyperscalers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud also investing heavily in AI data centers, Alibaba's modular strategy offers a competitive edge in time-to-market and capital efficiency, particularly for emerging markets where rapid deployment is key.
