Drones Could Soon Fly Non-Stop While Keeping Your Package Steady
No more pausing mid-air to steady the load — deliveries could get faster and smoother.
Imagine a delivery drone carrying a package on a rope, like a bucket on a string. Every time the drone speeds up, turns or brakes, the package swings. Today's fix is simple but wasteful: the drone hovers and waits for the swinging to stop before continuing. That pause burns battery, adds minutes and limits how much a drone can deliver in a day.
This paper, from researchers Antonio Franchi, Alberto Landi and Chiara Gabellieri, works out the math for a smarter approach. Their idea is to put a motorised winch on the drone so the rope can be pulled in and out during flight. Pulling the rope in or letting it out changes the rope's angle without changing the downward pull on the package. In plain terms: the drone and the package can keep moving together, and the package never loses its balance. The team even wrote a formula that says exactly how the rope length must change to keep the package perfectly still as the drone flies along a set path at a fixed height.
There is a real catch, and it is a big one. With only two drones sharing a load, this smooth, level, non-stop flight is basically impossible — the geometry blocks it. You need at least three drones, carefully positioned, working in tight coordination. The paper is also purely theoretical: everything is proven with equations and checked in computer simulations, not with real drones in the sky, and there is no word yet on cost or how such a system would handle gusty wind. So do not expect to see this over your street next week.
Still, it points at something practical. Multi-drone lifting already exists for awkward or heavy cargo, and the same logic applies to cranes and cable-suspended robots on construction sites. Get the math right, and one day heavy, delicate payloads could move through the air with fewer stops, less wasted energy and less risk of the load swinging into something it should not.
