๐Ÿš€ Quick start

๐Ÿ’ก Why use Synthesia for this

Recording the same training in several languages normally means booking presenters or voice actors for every language. Synthesia lets you make one avatar video and dub it. The speech is replaced in each language, the voice is cloned from the original, and lip sync is optional. If a script changes, you edit the master and dub again instead of re-recording.

๐Ÿ“‹ What you need

A Synthesia account (Basic is free; Starter or above for lip sync and no watermark), a 1-3 minute script, and a native speaker to review each language.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ How to Dub a Training Video into 70+ Languages (6 steps)

1

Step 1

Write a short, plain script: Write the script in short sentences with no idioms or slang. Keep it to 1-3 minutes for your first run. Use Prompt 1 below to clean up an existing script. Put as little text as possible on the slides, because on Basic, Starter and Pro the dubbing step changes the speech, not the words on screen.

2

Step 2

Create the master video: In Synthesia, create a new video. Pick a stock avatar (Starter includes 125+, Pro 180+), paste your script scene by scene and add your slides. You can also import a PowerPoint.

3

Step 3

Generate and check it: Generate the video and watch it all the way through. Fix pronunciation and pacing now. Every later change means dubbing again. A typical finished minute uses about 100 credits after your 10 included minutes. note how long generation took for a 60-second video.

Step 4

Open Dubbing and choose languages: Select Dubbing in the left menu (or Create โ†’ AI Dubbing). Upload your generated MP4 (up to 5 GB or 2.5 hours) or paste a YouTube link. Under 'Translate to', pick one or more languages. Self-serve plans support 70+ target languages.

5

Step 5

Set lip sync and timing: Open Advanced options. Turn on Lip sync if you are on Starter or Pro (not available on Basic, and it uses twice the credits). Leave Video duration on 'Adaptive', which Synthesia recommends for instructional content. Check the credit estimate shown before you start, then click Dub video.

6

Step 6

Review, then export: When the in-app notification arrives, watch each language version. Ask a native speaker to check anything going to customers. On self-serve plans you can't edit the dubbed transcript (that's Enterprise), so fix the source and re-dub from the original video's page with Translate. Download MP4s in Full HD (1920x1080) for your LMS. add our real before/after clip or screenshot here.

๐Ÿ“ฆ What you'll get

One Full HD (1920x1080) MP4 per language, with the same avatar and slides and the speech dubbed in a clone of the original voice.

๐Ÿ“‹ Copy-paste prompts

PROMPT 1 โ€” Make a script easy to dub
"Rewrite this training script so it can be dubbed into other languages. Use short sentences under 20 words. Remove idioms, slang, jokes and culture-specific references. Keep product names in English. Split it into scenes of 2-4 sentences. Script: [paste]"
PROMPT 2 โ€” Cut on-screen text
"Here are the slide texts for my training video: [paste]. Rewrite each slide as 3 words or fewer, or suggest an icon instead, so the slides still make sense when the voice is dubbed into other languages."
PROMPT 3 โ€” Native-speaker review checklist
"Write a 10-point checklist a native [language] speaker can use to review a dubbed training video: meaning, terminology, tone, names, numbers, units and dates."

โš ๏ธ Common mistakes

โŒ Planning on one-click Translation with a Starter or Pro plan.
Why it happens: Synthesia advertises 140+ languages.
โœ… Quick Fix: On self-serve plans use AI Dubbing (70+ languages). Translation of script and on-screen text is Enterprise-only.
โŒ Putting lots of text on slides.
Why it happens: It's how we build normal slide decks.
โœ… Quick Fix: Dubbing only changes the speech, so keep slides visual or near-wordless.
โŒ Dubbing before the source video is final.
Why it happens: It feels faster to start early.
โœ… Quick Fix: Lock the master first. Every change means re-dubbing, which uses credits again.
โŒ Forgetting that lip sync doubles dubbing credits.
Why it happens: The toggle is in Advanced options.
โœ… Quick Fix: Check the credit estimate before you click Dub video.

โš–๏ธ Synthesia vs Alternatives

HeyGen (Creator $29/mo) lists 175+ languages and dialects for video translation, but editing the translation script needs Pro ($49/mo). Colossyan has a free Starter plan with 15 auto translations a month, and Professional is $59/mo on an annual plan. It says narration, on-screen text and interactive elements are localised together. Synthesia is the pick if you already build training videos there and are happy with dubbed speech. If you need translated on-screen text without paying for Enterprise, compare Colossyan first. [TODO: our test] run the same 60-second script through all three before we give a winner.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I translate a Synthesia video for free?

You can dub on the free Basic plan, using your 10 included minutes a month, but there's no lip sync and videos carry a watermark.

Q: How many languages does Synthesia support?

Self-serve plans (Basic, Starter, Pro) can dub into 70+ languages. Enterprise gets 140+ languages and regional variants on its pricing page, and its dubbing docs list 135 languages and locales.

Q: Does dubbing translate the text on my slides?

No. Dubbing replaces the spoken audio. Translating the script and on-screen text together is the Translation feature, which is Enterprise-only.

Q: How many credits does dubbing use?

80 credits per dubbed minute with lip sync and 40 without, after your 10 included minutes each month.

Q: Does the dubbed video use my voice?

The first dubbed version uses a clone of the original speaker's voice. You can switch it to a stock voice afterwards and regenerate.

Q: Do unused credits roll over?

No. The monthly allowance and plan credits reset each billing period. Credits you buy separately last 12 months.
