How to Turn a YouTube Video into Study Notes with NotebookLM

🎯 Why This Matters

Watching a video at 2x speed still costs you the full runtime, and manual notes miss half of what was said. NotebookLM gives you a queryable, citable transcript — so you can ask 'what did they say about pricing?' and get the exact answer with a timestamp, instead of scrubbing through 40 minutes of footage hoping to find it.

📖 Overview

A product manager watched a 90-minute competitor launch keynote, pasted the YouTube link into NotebookLM, and walked out with a one-page brief, 15 flashcards, and a 6-minute audio summary — in under 12 minutes, without ever scrubbing the timeline.\n\nHere's the trick most people miss: NotebookLM doesn't treat a YouTube video as a video. It ingests the transcript as a text source, which means every answer it gives you is grounded in the actual spoken words and cited back to the timestamp. You're not asking a chatbot to guess what the video said — you're querying the transcript directly.\n\nYou need a free Google account and access to NotebookLM. The YouTube-source feature works on the free tier. No extensions, no downloads, no paid plan required to get started.\n\nBy the end you'll have a structured study guide, a set of flashcards, and an audio overview you can listen to on your commute — all built from a single video URL. The whole workflow takes about 10-15 minutes for a typical 60-90 minute video.

🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide

1

Step 1

Open NotebookLM and create a new notebook. In the sources panel on the left, click 'Add source' and select the YouTube option. [Screenshot: sources panel with YouTube option highlighted]

2

Step 2

Paste the full YouTube URL into the source field. Make sure the video has captions enabled — if it's a video without any captions, NotebookLM won't be able to extract the transcript. Click to add the source and wait for it to process.

3

Step 3

Once the source is loaded, click into the chat input at the bottom of the notebook. Start with a structural prompt: 'Give me a section-by-section outline of this video with the main topic of each section and a one-sentence summary.' This gives you the skeleton before you go deeper.

4

Step 4

Follow up with targeted extraction prompts. For example: 'What specific numbers, statistics, or data points did the speaker mention? List each one with context.' Then: 'What counterarguments or caveats did the speaker acknowledge?' Each answer will include citation markers you can click to jump to the relevant part of the transcript.

5

Step 5

Open the Studio panel (usually on the right side of the notebook). Select 'Flashcards' to auto-generate a study set from the source. Then select 'Audio Overview' to generate a conversational summary you can listen to. Both are generated from the same source transcript.

6

Step 6

Review the generated study guide in the chat, copy the flashcards into your notes app or a spaced-repetition tool, and download or play the audio overview. If you want to share the notebook, use the share option in the top-right corner to send a view-only link to a colleague.
