Forget Bandwidth: AI Needs a Diary! – Neural Toons comic

“Turns out, AIs are just like us: they need to write things down!”

The story behind the toon

What happened: Researchers found that AI agents invent shared language much better if they have a 'persistent private notebook' – like a personal journal to remember past interactions. This memory architecture helps them coordinate effectively, achieving 86.7% accuracy, even with lots of information. Simply giving them more 'channel capacity' (more ways to talk) without memory actually made them worse at communicating.

This Neural Toon is based on the story “Memory Architecture, Not Channel Capacity, Drives Language Emergence in LLM Agents”.

Comic transcript

Panel 1 – Alex: Our new AI team is scaling! 10x synergy!

Panel 1 – Priya: But they're just... yelling at each other.

Panel 1 – Fact: AI helpers struggle to understand each other in groups.

Panel 2 – Alex: We gave them a 'private notebook' (personal journal).

Panel 2 – Priya: And they coordinated 86.7% better? Wild!

Panel 2 – Fact: AIs with a personal journal coordinate 86.7% better than just talking more.

Panel 3 – Alex: This means AIs will learn to speak human!

Panel 3 – Priya: So our AI assistants will finally get us?

Panel 3 – Fact: AI assistants will understand us and each other way better.

Panel 4 – Alex: Need good 'memory' (how their brains remember).

Panel 4 – Priya: Otherwise, they get confused fast. Ugh.

Panel 4 – Fact: Without this memory, AIs get confused easily, especially with lots of info.
