AI's Weirdness Detector Can Get Confused! – Neural Toons comic

“We're teaching AI to spot the truly unique, not just the slightly odd!”

The story behind the toon

What happened: Ever worry AI misses important stuff, or flags harmless things? AI's 'weirdness score' can completely invert if the 'weird' things look too much like 'normal' things. This could lead to AI missing real threats or flagging normal things as problems in critical areas like security or healthcare. The problem is hardest to fix when the 'weird' things are truly subtle and blend in almost perfectly with 'normal' data.

This Neural Toon is based on the story “Testing the Test: Score-Direction Instability in Class-Split Anomaly Detection”.
