Microsoft's Cloud rebuild fixes unbootable Windows 11 with fresh install

Microsoft has introduced a new recovery tool called Cloud rebuild, now in preview for Windows 11 Insider builds. The feature addresses a long-standing pain point: when the operating system fails to boot due to corruption or glitches, users often struggle with existing recovery tools. Cloud rebuild allows a clean reinstall of Windows from scratch, downloading both the target Windows image and device drivers directly from Windows Update. This ensures the system comes back fully functional with the latest security patches, without relying on USB media, custom images, or the health of the current OS. Unlike the existing Reset this PC option, which requires users to manually install updates afterward, Cloud rebuild automates the entire process. The downside: all personal files, settings, and installed applications are wiped, so backup synchronization is essential.

To try Cloud rebuild, users need the latest Windows 11 Insider build (version 26300.8772 or higher) on a test PC or virtual machine. The process requires an internet connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. From Windows, navigate to Settings > System > Recovery, click "Restart now" under Advanced startup, then select Troubleshoot > Recovery and uninstall > Cloud rebuild. After confirming the target build and edition, a warning about data loss appears before installation begins. Microsoft plans to gather feedback and refine the feature, with a potential public rollout within the next few months. Cloud rebuild joins other recovery methods like Quick Machine Recovery, which attempts to fix boot issues without a full reinstall, but this new tool offers a definitive reset for unbootable systems.
