New 3D Printing Trick Lets Objects Feel How You Move Them
Print a joystick that senses every push — no sensors to install afterward.
Most 3D-printed gadgets are just shapes. If you want one to react to being touched or moved, you usually have to buy sensors, wires and chips and install them afterward — fiddly work that adds cost and breaks easily. A research team has now shown you can skip that step entirely. Their method, called X-Hinges, prints the sensing ability directly into the object while it is being made.
The trick is using two conductive plastics — materials that carry electricity — with slightly different properties, printed side by side inside a flexible body. When the object bends, the electrical resistance through those materials changes, and software translates that change into movement. Because it measures continuously rather than just on or off, it can follow a slow, smooth motion. One printed part handles three directions of movement at once: pushing, tilting side to side, and twisting.
The team also built an easy design tool. You can choose the shape, how stiff the part is, how many directions it senses, and where the sensing happens. It can even wrap sensing around an existing 3D model, turning a plain object — a lamp arm, a toy, a handle — into something that reports how it is being used. Likely uses include custom game controllers, switches for people with limited hand mobility, soft robot fingers, and fitness or rehab gear that tracks motion. The work was accepted at ACM UIST 2026, a top conference on new interface technology.
The catch: this is a lab result, not a product. It needs a multi-material 3D printer and special conductive filament, which most home printers cannot handle. Each printed object also needs calibration, and nobody yet knows how well the sensing holds up after thousands of bends. Still, it points to a future where the plastic parts around you quietly know what you are doing with them.
